In developing this unique location, local multi-faceted design firm, Luxury Frontiers (who specialise in architecture and interior design for eco-tourism hospitality) was given the brief to design an intimate, under-the-stars dining experience that captures the essence of KwaZulu-Natal’s rich cultural heritage while blending in with the natural landscape.
A Cultural and Natural Design Marvel
Inspired by the traditional Zulu beehive huts, The Boma at Madwaleni River Lodge is a testament to the elegance of simple, yet purposeful design. The circular structure, with its flowing curves echoes a theme of harmony, whilst also guiding guests into the centre of the space.
In line with Babanango’s commitment to sustainability, The Boma is constructed using repurposed Australian black wattle trees, a species that has invaded the natural grasslands of the region. Local artisans were tasked with weaving the wattle saplings into the Boma’s framework, celebrating the traditional Zulu skill of basket weaving while supporting conservation: a win-win.
As the wattle walls age and decay over time, local artisans will be invited to reweave them, perpetuating the cyclical process that reflects the natural rhythms of the surrounding wilderness. This not only creates employment but also strengthens cultural ties, ensuring that the traditions of the Zulu people continue to thrive. While some walls are woven, others are finished with local cow-dung plaster, further blending the structure in with its surroundings.
While constructed with natural, rustic materials, including a counter made of recycled timber and a crushed stone aggregate floor, The Boma also features practical amenities including storage and bathroom facilities to ensure guests are comfortable and all their needs can be attended to.
